Scropton Riding & Driving Centre is the home of Scropton Riding for the Disabled, one of a small number of purpose built Riding for the Disabled Centres. We are open 7 days a week and offer riding and driving lessons to over 200 disabled people of widely varying ages and disabilities. Scropton Riding for the Disabled Centre is a registered Charity supported by enthusiastic volunteers and fund-raisers.
Able-bodied riding & driving instruction is also offered to a high standard. Both group and private riding lessons are available. Driving instruction can be given for singles, pairs, tandems and teams. Training for British Driving Society and British Horse Society Exams can be given. Residential courses are available on request.
Scropton Riding and Driving Centre is situated in the village of Scropton in South Derbyshire. The Centre is about 10 miles southwest of Derby, 6 miles northwest of Burton and is conveniently situated just off the A50. The Centre is a BHS approved Riding Establishment.
Scropton Riding and Driving Centre has been on this site for over 40 years. The Centre was officially opened by HRH The Princes Royal, President of the RDA in 1978. However the group, then known as East Midlands Riding Association for the Handicapped, had first been set up in 1964 by Physiotherapists and Doctors from the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary who had the foresight to recognise great potential of riding for people with disabilities and fought hard to make the association a reality. We were a founder member of the national charity, the Riding for the Disabled Association, signing our membership papers in 1965. The group was based at Willington in Derbyshire until our move to Scropton.
We provide Riding and Carriage Driving lessons for approximately 200 disabled children and adults each week. Our riders and drivers come from special schools, day centres, training centres, community and private homes. All proceeds from the able-bodied riding & driving at the centre are used to support riding & driving for the disabled.
